A medical college is defined as an educational institution where medicine and health-related subjects are taught. Apart from the basic program of a bachelors degree which makes a person qualified to practice the profession of a Doctor, medical colleges also provide for researches in different branches of medical studies. Many colleges also run hospitals, so that the students who study in the respective colleges get practical knowledge.
The basic courses that a medical college offers include human anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, neurobiology, immunology and human biology. The course structure, duration, fees, and facilities differ with each college and also according to location of the colleges. But most of the medical colleges follow the same pattern of admission. The admission process kicks off with the entrance examination called the MCAT. Then, the students apply through the computerized method called AMCAS and choose a college of their choice. The colleges response is to consider the MCAT scores, previous academic records, letter of references and then call a student for an interview.
So a student who wishes to get admission in a medical college must have a good grasp over subjects like physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, genetics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathology, genetics, and human biology. But the battle to get a seat in a medical college does not end here. The admissions committee takes into account factors like research and volunteering activities, personal qualities like leadership, devotion, and maturity before selecting anybody.
After a student gets admissions, he has to study for four years which include two years of classroom study and two years of practical experience. However, a medical course is quite a costly affair and can be taxing on a middle-class family. So, during the period of study, medical colleges provide a lot of scholarships and students should always look out for such opportunities.
Even after completion of this program, a student cannot practice directly until he gets a license from the state authorities. He may be required to sit for an exam again to get his license. There could be a background investigation of the applicant and he will be required to submit letters of references.
