What Is Turbinado Sugar?
Turbinado sugar is raw sugar made from sugarcane that has been minimally processed. It has a golden brown colour and large crystals. Turbinado sugar can be used as a sweetener in beverages or as a baking ingredient.
Turbinado Sugar and White Sugar: What is the Difference?
Both turbinado sugar (also known as white sugar, refined sugar, or granulated) can be made from sugarcane. Both sugars have the same caloric as carbohydrates and other key differences.
- 1. Processing White sugar is obtained from sugarcane by boiling and juicing the juice. The sugarcane juice then thickens and crystalizes. The sugar is then filtered through a centrifuge to remove any impurities, a process known as refining. Turbinado sugar has a lower level of refined sugar than white sugar and therefore contains less natural molasses.
- 2. Color Turbinado sugar can be made into white sugar by filtering the molasses. To make white sugar, you need to add bone char. Sugar crystals made from sugarcane do not naturally turn white.
- 3. Sugar crystals – Turbinado sugar’s sugar granules are larger than white sugar. White sugar has finer granules but not as fine as Powdered Sugar.
- 4. Flavor Turbinado sugar is more caramel molasses than white sugar. This sugar has a sweeter, neutral flavour profile.
- 5. Nutrients: Turbinado sugar, a raw sugar, may have more nutrients than sugarcane because it has been minimally processed.
How to Substitute Turbinado sugar
You can substitute turbinado sugar for it if you don’t have any. The molasses flavour is stronger in dark brown sugars. You can use a mixture of brown and white sugar as a substitute for turbinado.
